He attacked her before evading capture
Narrative
Delia Balmer, a nurse at the agency, met Sweeney, who confessed to killing his ex-girlfriend. Balmer rebuilt her life to confront Sweeney seven years later, after he was arrested for another murder.
Based on a true crime story
The bodies were dumped in canals in Rotterdam (not Amsterdam) and London. I reluctantly dipped my toe in, thinking that despite the content, this would be a poorly written presentation of a time of female horror.
I was wrong, Anna Maxwell-Martin’s performance was so good that it was like listening to Delia
Too many of these programs can veer into sentimentality or sensationalism and can leave the viewer missing the point or, worse still, manipulated into anguished responses. It was Delia who made me watch, it was Delia who made this an exceptional programme.
As an aside, I will add two more comments
Delia was a hard worker even before the Troubles, and her intransigence in the face of what I think she considered petty rules and conventions did not endear her to others. The sheer frustration of watching, once again, the Keystone cops metaphorically groping around in an unlit room simply because they couldn’t be bothered to turn on the light was palpable.
Enough said; I highly recommend the show
The anger at the justice system that allows clearly vulnerable victims to be ridiculed on the witness stand was at its peak.
