Narrative
Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, who now lives at the Retirement Bears Home. As the Brown family moves on, a thrilling adventure ensues as a mystery takes them on an unexpected journey. However, he did come up with the idea for this third film and was involved as an executive producer. Paddington (2014) followed. ‘Paddington in Peru (2024)’ is not as good as Paddington 2 (2017), but it’s not as big a step back as some early reactions would have led me to believe.
Compared to its predecessors, it lacks a strong emotional core
For the most part, it’s still a fun and pleasantly polite experience, as enjoyable as it is refreshing. While the standard adventure narrative is less idiosyncratic than the vignette approach of the first two pictures, it still works well enough in this context, allowing its charming characters to continue to fascinate even when faced with the classic sequel. They are taken out of their natural habitat to explore the protagonist’s still-unknown origins. Funny moments abound, and the film is good-natured from the first frame. It’s a genuinely great movie, and sometimes that’s all you need.
Despite some issues, this feature still has more than enough to like
While its few moments are touching, the piece isn’t particularly moving and won’t make you cry. Also, some of its character work is rather shallow and, as my brother pointed out, almost feels like an obligatory corollary. The narrative is overall pretty conventional and almost entirely follows a specific formula. It’s fairly predictable and feels rather generic, almost as if they’ve adapted it to Paddington after its basic beats were already mapped out. Its charming cast is as strong as ever, with some great newcomers (Antonio Banderas and Olivia Coleman) happily chewing the scenery when needed.
It’s a very good time
The special effects are consistently good, and bring the eponymous bear to life in such a way that it’s strange to think he’s never in the same space as the other characters. When it doesn’t make a natural appearance on the red carpet, it feels like something is missing. The film is light and lively; it really flies by and is generally a lot of fun. It’s packed with jaw-dropping imagery, dialogue, and action scenes that will blow your mind. Ultimately, this is a perfectly respectable addition to their series, which is well-crafted and enjoyable.
It’s much better than a lot of similar fare
It’s a shame that it follows Paddington 2 (2017) because there’s an argument to be made about which is the best – or at least most universally appealing – picture of all time, because it really is a great family film. If you’re expecting the best movie of all time (again) or even the second best movie of all time, you’re obviously going to be disappointed. But it’s a solid effort that charms and entertains in almost every scene. If you’re not expecting a miracle, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
